Blades of glory: Canada’s best train in Port Moody

Some of Canada’s best figure skaters — including some who will be competing in the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games next February — took to the Olympic-sized ice at the Port Moody recreation complex last Thursday for training.
Above and right, Jessica Dubé and her partner Bryce Davison, go through a pairs practise.
Below far left, Kevin Reynolds goes through his workout, as does one of the country’s top prospects,
Patrick Chan of Toronto (below, second from left).
Another Canadian pairs team getting in practice in Port Moody are Craig Buntin and his partner Meagan Duhamel (below, second from right).
Later, Buntin and Duhamel watch a video replay of their practice (below, far right) to attempt to improve their performance.

Win puts Lambiel on track for Vancouver

OBERSTDORF, Germany (AP) — Olympic silver medalist Stephane Lambiel is a step closer to the Vancouver Games after winning at the Nebelhorn Trophy on Friday.

Making a comeback after retiring a year ago, Lambiel earned Switzerland a spot in the Olympic field. No Swiss skater had finished high enough at the recent world championships to claim one of the 24 spots available in Vancouver's 30-man field, meaning Lambiel had to finish sixth or better at Nebelhorn.

He did that with ease, winning both the short and long programs and finishing more than 25 points ahead of Ivan Tretiakov of Russia. Michal Brezina of the Czech Republic was third and American Ryan Bradley was fourth.

Lambiel's score of 232.36 points also puts him halfway to meeting the Swiss qualifying rules for Vancouver, which require skaters to score 195 points or better in two competitions. The two-time world champion also plans to compete in the Japan Open next month and the European championships in January.

Lambiel retired in October 2008 because of a lingering adductor muscle injury that was limiting his training. He resumed training this summer, saying the pain is now "manageable."

Two-time defending world champions Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy of Germany easily won the pairs title. Their training partners, Tatiana Volosozhar and Stanislav Morozov of Ukraine, were second, with Canada's Anabelle Langlois and Cody Hay third.

U.S. champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White lead the ice dance competition, while Alissa Czisny won the women's short program. The free dance and women's free skate are on Saturday.

Ex-champ Lambiel shines on comeback in Japan Open

SAITAMA, Japan — Two-time world champion Stephane Lambiel underlined his comeback to competition by powering Europe to victory in the Japan Open invitational team event here Saturday.
The 24-year-old Swiss touched the ice after nailing a quadruple toeloop and missed a triple in his opening combination. But he went on to collect 150.52 points to top the men's table.

The annual free-skating contest -- featuring two men and two women each from Europe, North America and hosts Japan -- provided a ground for skaters to test their new programmes at the start of the Olympic season.

"I'm very satisfied with my performance. It was not perfect and I still have to work hard for the Olympics," Lambiel said after his second competition of the season.

The 2005 and 2006 world champion and Turin Olympic silver medalist retired last year because of a lingering adductor muscle injury. But he has come back to go for the gold at the Vancouver Olympics in February.

Canada's world silver medallist Joannie Rochette topped the women's table with her personal best free-skate of 126.39 points, helping North America settle second with 463.90.

"Me and my coach wanted to take it as a good warm-up for the season," said the 23-year-old Rochette, whose previous personal best was 124.15. She skated to Camille Saint-Saens' Samson and Delilah.

"I think this programme is definitely a step-up from last year. It's more powerful but it's a bit of a challenge for me."

Japan's 2008 women's world champion Mao Asada made several mistakes to finish third at 102.94.

Asada, who turned 19 last week, fell after her trademark 3.5-revolution triple axel and missed a combination double. She also singled another triple axel in her next element.

She is one of the few female skaters who can regularly execute triple axels.

"I could not do a lot of things I have practiced. I need to work hard ahead of the Grand Prix series," said Asada.

She is due to clash with reigning world champion and archrival Kim Yu-Na of South Korea in the season's first Grand Prix event in Paris in a fortnight.
